Surrey County Council Elections (Thursday 4th JuneThank you if you helped our RA candidate Councillor Chris Frost to win this election.Details in our Summer 2009 Newsletter (See Chris' Election Manifesto, and the brief pen-portrait lower down on this web page.) Chris is now one of ten Residents’ Association councillors* on the otherwise Conservative-controlled County Council. (*One is technically an "Independent" as he pays his own election expenses, but he is supported by his local RA committees and has joined the RA group.) Surrey County Council has been poorly-rated in several recent quality assessment reviews. Residents' Association County Councillors are intent on continuing to press for changes in council policies so that services can be improved to the level that residents in the county of Surrey have the right to expect. We all know that the borough of Epsom and Ewell has consistently been voted as one of the best places to live in the UK [for example: 1st in 2005; 8th in 2006; 3rd in 2007 Channel 4 surveys: Best and Worst Places to Live]. This borough is managed by a RA-majority Borough Council. It does make a difference when local spending decisions are influenced by people who represent local residents directly, without the interference of national party politics or the party whips at County Hall. We are delighted to be able to maintain that influence in Surrey’s County Council. Lavandou Stables Development PlansThree formal Planning Application were received by the Borough Council on 13th March 2008.The Planning Committee refused to grant planning permission. Details in the Spring 2009 Newsletter. The Planning section of the EEBC borough website is at: EEBC Planning Department website . Organisation of the SocietyA managing committee is elected each year at the Society's AGM. Officers' positions are filled by committee members, who also select candidates to stand for election as Borough and County Councillors. The committee monitors and makes representations on local issues and liaises with council officers and our Borough and County Councillors and others in the interests of the residents of the Woodcote Ward.If you would like to help by serving on the committee please contact the Chairman (see below). An extensive network of "Road Representatives" collect subscriptions and distribute Newsletters and local informational flyers etc. Road Reps also act as a conduit to feed neighbours' views and suggestions back to the committee. There are some areas of the Ward still not covered by Road Reps; if you would like to help in this important role, please contact the Hon Treasurer (see below). CouncillorsTeresa Cass (Borough Councillor) Teresa is new to the Borough Council having been elected on 3 May 2007. She is a strong advocate of the RA ethos of ensuring local government for local people by local people and keeping national party politics out of local government. Teresa is on the Social Committee, Leisure Committee and The Walton & Epsom Downs Conservators. She has been a resident of Woodcote Ward for over 12 years and has a strong sense of community values and passionately believes in the strength of people working together to foster community spirit. Chris Frost (County Councillor) Chris has been a County Councillor since 1997, representing Epsom & Ewell South East. This includes the College and Woodcote Wards, and part of Ewell as far as and including the Reigate Road and NESCOT. As one of the more senior County Councillors, Chris was until recently the Leader of the RA Group of Councillors. He is on many committees, including the Epsom & Ewell Local Committee, the Personnel & Appointments Committee and the Lower Mole Countryside Management Project Members Steering Group. The latter allows him to link his council work with his involvement with environmental matters, as he is also Chairman of the Woodcote Millennium Green Trust. This is the body that manages and maintains the Millennium Green (which runs along Woodcote Green Road). All County Councillors have an allocation of money to spend each year, for the general benefit of the community. Chris has used his for a variety of items, e.g. for additional lighting in a footpath (Madans Walk) near Rosebery Park, more trees in Whitehorse Drive, smoke alarms for the elderly, new pavements outside St Christopher’s school and elsewhere in Downs Road, support for the Youth Club called YELL and safety measures for Wilmerhatch Lane. If anyone living in the Division has any ideas for other projects do contact him. Chris is married with two grown up children, and has lived in Woodcote Ward since 1976. Mike Richardson(Borough Councillor) Mike has been representing the Ward on the Borough Council since 2003. He is chairman of the Environment Committee covering, among other matters, anti-social behaviour, recycling and parking enforcement. Complementing this he is on the Surrey Local Government Association Joint Waste Strategy Consultative Board and the Surrey County Council Local Committee (dealing mainly with highway issues). Mike is also a member of the Financial Policy Panel that advises on sound financial management within the Borough. Mike chairs the Hospital Cluster Group dealing with community issues relating to the new development on the former hospital sites. In addition, he represents the Borough’s wider interests at meetings of the Business Partnership Board. He is the Borough’s representative on the Epsom Common Association, and on the Epsom and Walton Downs Conservators, and is on the Board of Directors of the Epsom Grandstand Association Ltd. He is also on the Member’s Steering Group of the Lower Mole Countryside Management Project, and on the Community Safety and Capital Programme Members Groups.
