The Ewell Village R.A. covers the main part of Ewell Ward around Ewell Village
with Bourne Hall and the spring for the Hogsmill River at its heart.
Ewell village lies 2 miles north of Epsom and 14 miles from the centre of London. A recent Channel 4 television programme, in voting Epsom & Ewell the UK’s best place to live, described Ewell an an ‘idyllic village’. With its long history, Ewell today is a pleasant mix of old and new and has been well managed by local residents’ association Councillors for 80 years to ensure that it retains its notable village atmosphere in the 21st century.
In Roman times Ewell was a settlement on Stane Street (London to Chichester) being attractive with its clean spring water, fertile ground and sheltered in the lee of the North Downs. In 150AD Ewell was Surrey’s largest village - a resting place equivalent to to-day’s motorway service stop. Later, in medieval times it was divided into manors and was well farmed. In the 18th century Ewell was the leading place for the manufacture of gunpowder at the water mills on the Hogsmill river. The coming of the railways in the 19th century with two stations serving London to the north and to the south coast made Ewell a very convenient place leading to 20th century growth.
Bourne Hall is a community centre library and museum at the heart of the village, it has an interesting circular and domed roof. It sits in a park with a lake fed by the Hogsmill river.
The village has its own Morris side which traditionally tours the village on Boxing Day, dancing and collecting for the Mayor's charities and performing its own Mummers Play in which the Mayor plays a starring role. For more details and unique map of Old Ewell go to www.ewellmorris.co.uk.
Ewell’s 3 borough councillors are sponsored by, and stay in close touch with Ewell Village Resident’s Association.
