Ewell Court R.A. is in the northern part of the Borough, and its membership includes households on both sides of the Kingston Road, at the top end of Ruxley Lane, and the community based around Ewell Court House. It extends to the Borough boundary with Kingston, and its southern boundary is the picturesque Hogsmill River and its associated open space.

So what is the Ewell Court Residents' Association?

Ewell Court Residents' Association (ECRA) is the coming-together of local people to work for the improvement of Ewell Court Ward and to promote the interests of local Ewell Court residents.

Anyone can be a member of ECRA; subscriptions (currently £3) are paid annually based on each household, so that all family members living in a subscribing house are members. Currently over 90% of households in Ewell Court are members of the Association. Each spring an Annual General Meeting takes place at which those wishing to take a more active role are elected to serve on the ECRA Committee. Currently, there are 17 Committee members, including a Chairman, Secretary, Minute Secretary, Treasurer and Magazine Editors. With such a high membership rate and large Committee, ECRA is a very active and enthusiastic association.

ECRA also has a Social Section that organises regular theatre trips to London and other excursions.

In support of its aims "to safeguard and promote the interests of residents and encourage them to take an active part in local affairs", ECRA sponsors three Councillors on Epsom and Ewell Borough Council. Jean, Jonathon and Eber all live in the ward and are active in dealing with the day-to-day issues that concern our residents. In addition, Eber is also the County Councillor for Epsom and Ewell North, an area which covers Ewell Court as well as Auriol and Cuddington. For details of how to contact any one of our councillors, see below.

Ewell Court Residents' Association was founded in 1938 and ECRA councillors have represented local people on Epsom and Ewell Borough Council throughout that time. The Association is not party-political, but it does believe that by getting involved in local elections, it can help to make a real difference to the quality of people's lives.

The success of the Residents’ Association is based on Councillors, members of the Committee and residents working together for the benefit of the community as a whole. So maybe, having read about ECRA, you too might like to get involved.

Friends of the Hogsmill

The “Friends of the Hogsmill” are local people who are keen to help look after their local area, including the open grassland between the railway bridge below Meadow Walk, and Ruxley Lane.

They were involved in the creation of both the woodland loop path within the grounds of Ewell Court House, and the surfacing of the path from Ruxley Lane to Green Lanes.

They are always keen to have new helpers to assist in the occasional tasks, for example litter-picking along stretches of the Hogsmill riverbank.

Clinker Bridge

Fallen trees had obstructed the view of the Clinker Bridge from the Hogsmill riverside path near the Thames Water compound beyond the end of Manor Drive. Thankfully these have now been removed, and this picturesque feature is now clearly visible once again.

In Ewell Court people care about their local environment and the street beyond their front gate. They act alone but also together, often through the Ewell Court Residents’ Association, to ensure that Ewell Court remains a pleasant place to live. As the local Borough and County Councillor, my remit is wide and, just like Jean and Jonathon, I want residents to contact me if they feel I can help to resolve an issue. Working together we can achieve so much more.

A key interest of our residents is planning and I am on the Planning Committee and can be contacted for advice. However, Planning Law requires me to take decisions on applications on planning grounds only and, like all other councillors on the Planning Committee, I cannot pre-judge a decision or I would be disqualified from speaking and voting at the Planning Committee meeting. That said, the Borough Council's planning policies are very clear and are designed to protect our green spaces, avoid backland development, and to take account of issues such as the overlooking of a neighbour's property.
