College is one of the Borough's largest wards, running from the town to (and
encompassing part of) the Downs in the South and to the outskirts of Ewell in
the East. Mainly residential and with several designated conservation areas,
properties range from small artisan cottages to large Victorian and Georgian
homes. The ward has four racing yards, a golf course and Epsom College, the
public school founded in 1855 by the medical profession and from which the ward
takes its name.
College Ward Residents Association is a non-political body which aims to safeguard and improve the interests of residents within the Ward, and the amenities of the Borough as a whole. Membership is available to any resident living within College Ward. A Committee is elected each year at the AGM to run the affairs of the Association. Every 4 years the Association selects 3 candidates for the Borough Council elections and, in consultation with 2 other wards, a candidate for Surrey County Council elections. Until the Borough Council elections in May 2007, all 4 Councillors represented the Residents Association. Unfortunately the RA Borough Councillors were not re-elected, but the County Councillor continues to represent the Residents Association.
College Ward Residents Association fully supports the Residents Association ideal throughout the Borough of keeping Epsom & Ewell free from national party politics by a system of local people helping local people in the community. It does this by ensuring that every road has a representative to whom Councillors and Committee can talk and who will deal with any issues on behalf of local people; and by copying its newsletters and flyers to every address in the Ward. A recent survey of every house showed that the issues of most importance to members of the Ward are reducing anti-social behaviour, more recycling schemes, improvements for young people, and improved parking within the Ward. Other major issues have been the regeneration of Elizabeth Welchman Gardens, traffic calming measures for the dangerous Burgh Heath Road, and on-going vigilance and involvement in planning applications in the Ward.
